The Ides of March

By Donna Bumgarner, CPA

15_pres_sm_1.jpgWhat do we think of as we enter March? On the morning of March 11, the chapter’s Not-for-Profit Committee is offering a 90-minute meeting on special event compliance for nonprofit organizations. Please consider registering online.

Other March happenings include fundraising for The March of Dimes, the leading nonprofit organization for pregnancy and baby health; you will all soon receive your U.S. Census forms; and daylight savings time starts March 14. Don’t forget to turn your clocks forward so you can appreciate that extra hour of daylight as you are concentrating on getting those corporate tax returns out the door before the March 15 due date.

The opening round of March Madness begins March 16, to be closely followed by St. Patrick’s Day March 17. If you don’t have tickets, you may want to stay away from the area around the HP Pavilion as the NCAA Tournament comes to our fair city March 18 and 20. Enjoy the games if you’re lucky enough to get tickets and can take the time away from your office.

In between all these activities is the Ides of March, which was originally the 15th day of the month in the Roman calendar. Don’t we just love trivial facts? This day is best known as the date that Julius Caesar was assassinated after being warned to “beware the Ides of March.”

I caution all of us to beware the Ides of March during this busiest time of our tax and audit season. Take time to enjoy the extra daylight, the spring flowers and your families.
