Santa Cruz Discussion Group

Are you in the Santa Cruz area and looking for some networking opportunities? Are you interested in specific topics? On Tuesday, Aug. 5, at 7:30 a.m., we will hold an exploratory meeting at the Hilton Santa Cruz/Scotts Valley; 6001 La Madrona Dr., Santa Cruz.

Bring your thoughts about topics that interest you and any other ideas to discuss over breakfast. There is no obligation; simply come with your ideas, and we will make it happen. Pre-registration is not needed for this exploratory meeting, so bring your ideas and $10 for your breakfast.

Then, on Tuesday, Oct. 7, from 11:15 a.m.–2 p.m., in conjunction with UCSC, CalCPA’s Santa Cruz Discussion Group will have our first “kick-off” meeting with Steven Anderson of Carr-McClellan and Eric DePaepe of Ensemble as our speakers. Steven will discuss planning for grandchildren, and Eric will discuss philanthropic vehicles. The lunch will be held at The Seymour Marine Discovery Center located at the end of Delaware Ave., Westside Santa Cruz.

There will be a small fee for the event. Admission to the center is free for the day to lunch attendees. Watch for detailed information to come in future Bulletins.

Seven of us showed up for this event, but there was no host or information left with the front desk. Regardless, it was a pleasure meeting those that attended. We discussed teaching opportunities at UCSC, the paperless office, and even ideas about a play involving accountants. We will be meeting again, most likely before 10/7 with a more specific topic.

“Basically, the Hilton really screwed up. Although I was pointed in the right direction, half of us were not.”
I just got off the phone with Bob Shepherd the head of UCSC Accounting Department. Apparently, the person (at the Hilton) they spoke to did not know about us and sent him in the wrong direction. They got together and started their own meeting and did their own agenda. At the meeting with Mike (myself), Julie (CalCPA), Rachel, Paul & Peter we discussed strategic outreach to Santa Cruz accountants, future topics and times of seminars and planning meetings. Bob told me that he would send me the emails of the attendees of his parallel meeting and I would send them a synopsis of our meeting.
