In Memoriam: A Manny For All Seasons
We lost a remarkable member with the recent passing of “Manny” Manahan, former chair of the Sunset Discussion Group.
“Manny came to San Francisco from the Philippines, and attended Golden Gate University and passed the CPA Exam to practice here,” said Jerry Sample, chapter past president. “He did this while working full time as a bookkeeper/accountant. This process took a decade or more.”
Manahan joined CalCPA as soon as he was eligible, and was an active member from the start, attending council meetings and setting up a hospitality suite, and attended all the chapter meetings he could. He also started the Sunset Discussion Group. He supported professionally, and sometimes financially, scores of young emigrants through college and to eventually become CPAs.
“I met Manny at one of the first chapter events I attended, he was the first member to introduce himself and welcome me to CalCPA,” Sample said. “Until his illness he was ubiquitous at CalCPA events and after his recovery he tried to attend as many as he could. Even in retirement he would come down from his home in Paradise to attend and lead committee meetings. Manny was a credit to our profession.”
Former CalCPA Board member Ted Mitchell adds: “I had the pleasure of introducing Manny when he was named Golden Gate University Alumni of the Year. He was a truly kind gentleman whose charitable works and unflagging optimism enriched everyone who came in contact with him. Among his many charitable deeds was to establish a scholarship at Golden Gate University to aid international students.”
