Local, State Happenings
By Karen Pfau-Martinez, CPA
We are well into our summer months now. I traveled back to Indianapolis recently and experienced very warm weather and great summer nights. I have been in San Francisco for 30 years, but I still miss my warm summer nights.
Speaking of warm places, the CalCPA Annual Members’ Business and Council meeting was held in Disneyland in June. One of the topics discussed that affect our profession is the crisis in higher education. We are losing Ph.D.s; the state has cut California State University funding by 38 percent; and it is harder to obtain access to classes and teachers because of furloughs. With such a crisis, how are we going to attract qualified candidates to follow in our footsteps? Do you have the urge to teach and to offer your services to your local college or university? Many of them are looking for you. Let me know if you are interested and we will see if we can find a spot for you.
Our annual chapter luncheon featured Lisa Pantages, vice president of finance for our San Francisco Giants, who spoke of her career. For her job, she has to keep three separate sets of books! And we thought we had problems with only one set. We also honored Charlotte Wall, our first San Francisco Chapter Distinguished Service Award winner. Charlotte, a director on our chapter board, is a partner at Spott, Lucey & Wall and specializes in international tax. She is also very passionate about our education crisis and she is always trying to figure out how to offer more scholarships with her involvement in our Accounting Education Committee. We also discovered that she enjoys participating in Civil War re-enactments. Charlotte, thank you for all your hard work and dedication to our profession.
