Happy Holidays! ¡Felices Fiestas! My daughter Melissa likes to say that her Oct. 7 birthday is the start of the holiday season. For us that means Halloween, Thanksgiving, UCLA vs. USC football, Christmas and New Year’s Day! This year is special due to the fact that my family will be coming to our house to celebrate Christmas, which we love. Whether you are in the midst of celebrating Hanukkah or will be celebrating Christmas or Kwanzaa, I wish you a blessed season. I hope to see each of you Dec. 8 at our chapter’s annual Holiday Party at the Hyatt Regency La Jolla at Aventine.

Do you think it is better to start in a small firm or a large firm? If a large firm is a better start, then should I refuse a small firm? Is a master’s degree in accounting better than an MBA?

As a UCLA Bruins fan, the past two weeks have been great! I headed to Austin with my husband and daughter to support the team as they faced the University of Texas Longhorns—and UCLA won! It was the team’s second consecutive victory over a Texas team, as it beat the University of Houston the previous week.

It’s September already! While summer has been mainly business as usual at a somewhat slower pace for most of us who work as CPAs, I am still sad to see the end of the lazy days of summer. However, I’m excited for the beginning of fall. September brings back memories of new school clothes, new teachers, old friends and, of course, football. The start of the school year was—and is—an opportunity to make new resolutions.

Hola! ¿Qué está haciendo? Hi, what are you doing? Hopefully, I will be able to tell you more about my activities in Spanish next month. For now, I must continue in English while sitting at my kitchen table, sipping an ice-cold glass of white sage & wild mint tea as I try to cool down after wandering through the aisles of the Vista farmer’s market, sampling sweet melons and late-season cherries. The fruits are sweet and delicious this time of year.

We had a wonderful turnout at our Chapter Installation event May 11. It was a beautiful and fun evening at the Hyatt Regency Mission Bay. We recognized our past presidents whose invaluable participation continues to play an important role in the professional growth of our chapter. Also, I had the pleasure of presenting scholarships to a deserving group of recipients—Brian Szuberla, Karryn Kawashima, Joy Leon, Tingting Li, Patricia Langowski, Kenneth White, Catherine Girard, Michael Steele, Michelle Bourgeot, Andraya Noreuil, Bradlee Baldwin, Henry Wang and Anita Ambegaokar—who represent SDSU, USD, CSUSM, UCSD Extension and Mira Costa Community College. I’m extremely proud of our chapter’s commitment to the education of the next generation of CPAs. These students substantiate my belief that our profession has a bright future. I encourage you to continue your generous support of our scholarship fund.

I would like to express my thanks to Joe Forlenza and the terrific group of individuals who served on the chapter’s 2009–10 board of directors. Through Joe’s vision and outreach, the chapter gained the invaluable recommitment of several chapter past presidents to be leaders and mentors. Throughout the year, chapter members enjoyed quality CPE at affordable prices and accessible locations due to the diligent efforts of the committee chairs. As we start the 2010–11 year, keep an eye out for even more relevant, quality continuing education opportunities to be held at local venues.

I would like to take a moment to review some noteworthy highlights from 2009-10 that stand out in my mind as an indication of our progress as a chapter.
By far, the most exciting aspect of this past year has been the involvement of our past presidents in chapter events and activities. We held a past presidents breakfast at the Grant Grill in downtown that was well attended and a lot of fun! I hope this event signals the beginning of a strong collaboration between our chapter’s foundational members and the future leaders of our profession.
