Leadership

January 23rd, 2012

By Nai Hwang

I recently conducted a brief survey at the board meeting to gain an understanding of each member’s perspective of leadership. I asked them to consider a definition, qualities and practice. The survey results may serve as a reminder for daily living:

Final Days of Summer

August 30th, 2011

By Nai Hwang

hwangnaismblogSummer ended with our members enjoying a relaxing evening at our annual chapter event held on the beach of Mission Bay at the Catamaran Resort Hotel and Spa. September will be a busy month with chapter offerings of CPE, discussion groups, the US-Mexico Conference (hosted by our fellow CPAs from Mexico) and a YEP event hosted by Becker Professional Education. I encourage you to take advantage of the many opportunities to network with colleagues and other professionals—and gain knowledge without leaving town.

Summertime

July 27th, 2011

By Nai Hwang

hwangnaismblogLast month began with flags flying, fireworks and barbecues at the beach, and it ended with cheering for the Padres at the YEP event at PETCO Park. I hope you’ve been able to enjoy the sights and sounds of summer. In the month of August, your chapter leaders have put together several unique chapter events. I especially encourage you to check out our business and industry event covering accounting and nonprofits, followed by a performance at the Mandell Weiss Theatre.

The MEAT of the Matter

June 7th, 2011

By Nai Hwang

hwangnaismblogThe busy month of May kicked off with the first YEP networking event and meetings of the North County Coastal Discussion Group and LaJolla/Life’s a Beach Discussion Group, as well as the first board meeting of the new fiscal year, which was followed by the chapter installation at the Hyatt Regency Mission Bay. Everyone enjoyed the evening as we thanked our past president, Melody Thornton, for her leadership and contributions, recognized new life members and honored our scholarship recipients. It was so nice to catch up with many of you and greet new individuals after a long tax season. During the course of the evening, I shared my plans and hopes for my presidency by describing what I consider to be the MEAT of future chapter programs.

Greetings

May 5th, 2011

By Nai Hwang

hwangnaismblogI hope that each of you had a good tax season—in spite of the three extra days! As one year ends, another tax year begins! I am honored and excited to serve as your chapter president for the coming year, and am grateful to past president Melody Thornton for her leadership, passion and zeal in promoting our chapter, organization and profession during 2010-11. Also, many thanks to the chapter leadership team members for their efforts to make this past year such a successful one. I’m excited to welcome some new additions to our board, who will join our experienced returning members.

Final Thoughts

March 30th, 2011

By Melody Thornton, CPA

12_pres_sm_2I love daylight savings time and its long evenings. Thanks to the sunshine outside, I am even enjoying this time in my office writing my last president’s message. It is with mixed emotions that I write this letter. On one hand, I am thrilled, because writing these letters has been the hardest part of the job. On the other hand, I am sad to be leaving, because I have enjoyed this year enormously.

Reflections

January 4th, 2011

By Melody Thornton, CPA

12_pres_sm_1As we start 2011, there are many challenges to face in our profession, our state, our nation and the world. So, I decided to be positive by reflecting on some of the successes of CalCPA during 2010. Last year, CalCPA launched an Emerging Leaders Certificate Program designed for CPAs who have been licensed for five years and less for all chapters throughout the state. The program covered various leadership topics and provided another venue for young professionals to forge lasting relationships within their local communities.
