One of our main objectives as a chapter is to build up our scholarship fund to help deserving students tackle the cost of their accounting education. We award scholarships to both community and four-year college students. I’m excited to report our chapter has awarded more than $200,000 to future CPAs over the past three years!
We raise funds for our scholarship program by hosting various events during the year. One such event is our annual golf tournament, which we’ve hosted for more than half a century! CPAs and their clients can take a break from the office for a day on the course while supporting a great cause. Foursomes play in a scramble, or best ball, format and we award prizes for both the best and worst scores for 18 holes. I’m reluctant to admit that my foursome has been a recipient of the Worst Score prize: A sleeve of tennis balls and a gift certificate for golf lessons.
Our 54th Annual Golf Tournament will be held at Granite Bay Golf Club on Monday, Aug. 21. Both lunch and dinner are included with your registration, and libations are provided throughout your round. We offer a few extras for added entertainment: putting contest, helicopter ball drop, million dollar shot, golf ball launcher and hole in one for a car. We also raffle off amazing prizes at the dinner following your round. Moscow Mule gift basket anyone?
Many of our scholarship winners volunteer at the tournament, and appreciate the opportunity to thank our members in person for their encouragement and support of their education. This also is a great opportunity for the students to network with professionals practicing in various areas of accounting.
We encourage you to consider participating in our upcoming tournament either by playing or sponsoring. If you worry about being awarded the Worst Score prize, there’s always the opportunity to sponsor. We’re in need of raffle sponsors; for any donated amount we’ll build a gift basket and you get to take the credit.
I co-chair the Golf Tournament Committee along with Chris Hastie (Campbell Taylor & Company) and Jenni Harmon (Wagner Kirkman Blaine Klomparens & Youmans). If you’re interested in joining our committee or volunteering at the event, please let me know.
