Big Plans for New Year

By David Chavez, CPA

11_pres_sm_1There’s been a changing of the guard. I’m proud to take on the task of chapter president and excited about the opportunity to make a difference.

First, I would like to thank Pat Rogan and the officers, directors and committee chairs for their amazing service over the past year. They really set up this year to be a great success. I’d also like to thank the new officers, directors and committee chairs for joining me in leading our chapter.

I know that many of you have had a difficult tax season and need time to digest what the season provided. We are faced with an economy that continues to sputter. If you are a practicing CPA, I’m sure you’ve seen the challenges that have come up with some of your clients. If you’re in industry, it’s likely that you’ve seen cutbacks and layoffs in your companies. If you’re in government, the furloughs have brought on added work and reduced pay.

The CPA profession stands tall. We continue to be one of the most respected professions. Whether we realize it or not, our clients, businesses and government need us. This profession has always risen to the occasion and will continue to do so.

My goal for the new year is to continue to push the profession forward. We’re not our grandfather’s CPA. We are armed with high-powered computers, intricate software and astonishing communication devices. We continue to fight our own insecurities about change, but technology will allow us to do more with less. This is why technology will be emphasized within every chapter committee, not just the Technology Committee.

We want to make it easy for you, our members, to access all of the resources CalCPA offers. Technology is the answer.

I also know that we are strong in numbers. Our membership is a key factor to the success of the profession. I will continue to push to increase chapter membership during the next year.

In the upcoming months, I will update you on these and many other items.

A calendar of upcoming committee meetings and events will be published in May. Of particular note is the 2010–11 installation dinner and dance that is scheduled for Friday, June 11. Please join me to show our appreciation of the outgoing leadership and welcome the new directors, committee chairs and officers at the Arden Hills Resort Club & Spa.

I would love to hear any comments, suggestions or questions you may have. You can contact me via e-mail. I promise to read and respond to every question.
