Looking Back to Look Forward
By Patrick D. Rogan, CPA
April marks the end of my term as chapter president. This experience has been very rewarding, but has gone way too fast. During this time, I have met a lot of new people.
I would like to thank the leadership team for its hard and eager work this year. The team came together and worked to make CalCPA and the chapter a better place for you to participate in our monthly events.
As I look back, we had a lot of accomplishments. All of our committees had volunteers as committee chairs; we re-established the Governmental Accounting & Auditing, Nonprofit and Business & Industry committees; we launched the Roseville Discussion Group; and a new discussion group is forming in Davis. Members also are talking about restarting discussion groups in Redding and Chico.
During the past year, I made an effort to reach out to members in the outlying regions, and I participated in the Chico State Accounting Advisory Committee meeting in December. I urged our members to participate with their local colleges and universities and become involved with financial literacy projects. Also this year, our scholarship program had the highest number of students to apply for a chapter accounting scholarship.
I also must report that even in our down economy, the chapter hosted several successful events, including the golf tournament, various student activities and the ABC event.
Each of you should make a concerted effort this year to attend one of our wonderful events or committee meetings. These gatherings give you the opportunity to connect with your peers, which benefits you personally and professionally and also provides benefits to your firm. The chapter has a wide variety of events and committees that should be of interest to you. Consider being added to a committee’s mailing list so you can be informed of its activities
As organizations grow and move forward, new and future leaders are always needed to continue the success of the past. If you know any individuals who might be good leaders, please encourage them to participate. If you want to be more involved with the chapter, contact program associate Dana Agosti, program director Vince Chin program director, or contact the new leadership team.
CalCPA has instituted a new certificate leadership program for young and emerging members. This program is limited to those CalCPA members who are zero to five-year licensees. Participants will meet monthly beginning in May. The cost is $259 for the full seven-session certificate program. Keep in mind that even though you may not be eligible for the certificate program, you can access the program’s individual webcasts, which are open to members. The deadline is fast approaching. If you are interested, please sign up online.
A number of events are scheduled for April. The Litigation Committee meets April 15, and the Tax Committee meets April 22. Check out the chapter website for more details.
I look forward to working with the new leadership team led by David Chavez, our new chapter president, Anjela Dyatlov, vice president and David Boyce, secretary/treasurer.
As the reins are turned over, I hope to see each of you at a chapter event.
I welcome your comments and suggestions and would like to hear from you. I read each comment and respond.
