I recently spoke with two groups of pre-school students about being a CPA. Yes, you read correctly, pre-school—ages 2.5 to 6 years. When I volunteered to do this, the first thing I did was contact Jane Dunbar, our chapter’s program administrator, for suggestions from CalCPA. She, along with Melissa Thornton, CalCPA’s community outreach coordinator, came back with excellent examples of how to engage the kids through a Q&A.

Who Said Accountants Are Boring?

September 27th, 2011

By Parisa Nesva Derani, CPA

It’s a small world! I recently attended a dinner at a friend’s house. It turned out to be a small gathering of eight, including my two children. I knew only the hostess and her daughter. As we sat down for dinner and began talking I found out that Robert, the man sitting across from me, was a CPA! I mentioned to him that I am president of our chapter, and he replied, “Well, I’m a past president.” I said, “You’re kidding? What is your last name?” He said, “Caplan.” Immediately, I reacted, “Oh, wait a minute, I just honored your service in my September message!”

Global CPA Exam—Thoughts?

August 30th, 2011

By Parisa Nesva Derani, CPA

parisa-nesva-derani-sm-blogIn August, the AICPA and NASBA announced that the Uniform CPA Examination will be given outside the 55 U.S. jurisdictions for the first time in history. In 2010, the AICPA, NASBA and Prometric—the three organizations that jointly offer the CPA Exam in the United States—reached an agreement to administer the exam in five international locations: Japan, Bahrain, Kuwait, Lebanon and the United Arab Emirates.

Your Profession Needs You!

July 27th, 2011

By Parisa Nesva Derani, CPA

parisa-nesva-derani-sm-blogAs your chapter president, I am writing to you today to ask for your help. As you know, every year we face an increasing number of proposed laws and regulations that can make it more challenging and complex for the profession to represent clients. Each time one of these restrictive and costly proposals surface, the importance of our participation in the political process becomes evident.

New Staff Accountant—Salary Starting Point

June 24th, 2011

By Parisa Nesva Derani, CPA

parisa-nesva-derani-sm-blogFor those CalCPA members who are hiring, I performed a quick search of starting salaries for current staff and new hires in the Peninsula/Silicon Valley area. According to Robert Half, the average salary is between $44,000 and $54,000 per year. My parameters for the search were: zero to one year experience; corporate general and tax accounting, public accounting—audit/assurance and tax services; and company revenue $25 million and below.

Leadership=Vision+Execution

June 1st, 2011

By Parisa Nesva Derani, CPA

parisa-nesva-derani-sm-blogOur recent installation luncheon was an amazing gathering of board members, past chapter presidents and CalCPA staff. We were fortunate to have CalCPA CEO Loretta Doon, as well. She is an outstanding leader of the largest CPA society in the nation. Humble in nature, she has lead CalCPA for many years and delivered a healthy and vibrant organization. Thank you, Loretta, for your efforts. And thanks to the past CalCPA chairs and directors for their hard work, time and ideas that have helped build what we now know as CalCPA. You addressed and introduced matters facing our profession to take us along the path and look to the future. The ability to do this is not simple. It takes passion, vision, persistence and execution. I am thankful and humbled to be associated with you.

Your Year—A New Beginning

May 3rd, 2011

By Parisa Nesva Derani, CPA

parisa-nesva-derani-sm-blogSpring is here, bringing forth a new beginning. And so we begin again with a new year at CalCPA and a new beginning for me as your chapter president. It is a great pleasure to accept the role and step in to assume the responsibilities of this office. I turn to you, our members, the board and our committee leaders for your support in helping make this year “your year.” Each of you play a key role in our ever-dynamic profession and help to create what we know as CalCPA. As such, I would like to invite you to take part, listen, suggest and have CalCPA work for you.

Leaving With More Than I Started With

March 30th, 2011

By Laura C. Olson, CPA

10_pres_sm_0_0It has been an honor and a privilege to serve as your chapter president over this past year. I leave my term having gained more than what I started with. I have met many of you this year at our fantastic events and particularly enjoyed meeting many of you at Student Night this fall and the ABC Mixer last May. I am very happy that we have had such great attendance at our many events during the year and have been pleasantly surprised that many of you say you actually read the monthly blog.

CPA Day at the Capitol

February 9th, 2011

By Laura C. Olson, CPA

10_pres_sm_0_0The January CalCPA Council meeting in Sacramento is always a great way to pull together as professionals and contemplate the issues that we face as a profession. The day before the council meeting, approximately 180 CPAs went to Sacramento to meet with various legislators during CPA Day at the Capitol.

Happy New Year!

January 4th, 2011

By Laura C. Olson, CPA

10_pres_sm_0_0I hope everyone had a chance to get some much needed time off during the holiday season! I really do not believe in new year’s resolutions, but feel that we must always evaluate and reassess throughout the year. That being said, the new year is always a time to plan for the upcoming year and approaching busy season.

Yes, many of us need to lose weight, exercise and clean out our closets, but let’s try and think about what we can do for our profession in 2011. One easy way to do this is to attend CPA Day at the Capitol Jan. 19. This is an easy way to be part of the process. Following a CalCPA briefing on pertinent issues, you will visit with a California state legislator in a small group with fellow members. Please register online to make sure our voice is heard loud and clear in Sacramento.
