Outgoing President’s Message: Reflections
By Michael A. Thompson, CPA
In reflecting on this past year, it’s clear that it is our members who make the chapter a success.
Membership: As CalCPA reached its 100th year, our chapter surpassed 1,000 licensed members, which gives us one additional seat on CalCPA Council and increased leadership visibility. I am also pleased with CalCPA’s new Key Performance Indicators report, as I have learned that one-third of our members have attended a CalCPA event this year. This attendance is excellent in comparison to CalCPA as a whole, and this monthly report will help us focus to reach even more members in the coming years.
Chapter Events: Two events stand out as most memorable: The chapter celebrated CalCPA’s 100th year at the Menlo Circus Club in Atherton in September, which featured guest speaker Mary E. Barth from the Stanford Graduate School of Business talking about globalization of financial reporting. Most of our chapter’s past presidents also attended. And in October we held our scholarship awards dinner at Poplar Creek Golf Course near Coyote Point. Our panelists discussed career expectations once our students graduate, with an emphasis in accounting. We had more than 150 attendees representing all of our colleges—a mark of success as we continue to reach out to our local accounting programs.
Committee Leaders: I would like to recognize several committee chairs for their commitment to the chapter’s success: Alison Proctor and Anthony Rozenvasser (Emerging Professionals) have had stellar success holding socials and licensing seminars; Dennis Young for spearheading the annual mixer for attorneys, bankers and CPAs; David Sacarelos for his many years of service heading the Silicon Valley Forum, which targets those in business and industry; Timothy McCrone for holding monthly MAP meetings that supports owners of local CPA firm; And Laarni von Ruden and Jack Morton for providing a discussion forum on nonprofit issues that continues to grow. Congratulations to all our committee chairs.
In addition, program associate Jane Dunbar truly deserves recognition, as she is the backbone of our chapter.
Laura C. Olson, a senior tax manager at Hood & Strong, will take over as 2010-11 chapter president. She grew up on the Peninsula and attended UC Berkeley. We are in good hands with Laura in charge.
