Reflections
By Brian Rush, CPA
My year as your chapter president has gone by much too quickly. I enjoyed getting to meet many of you at our mixers, golf day, fall seminar series, economic forecast breakfast, young emerging professional get-togethers and other events. I want to thank our officers, interest group chairs and board members for a job well done. Their tireless efforts often go unsung, but without them the chapter would not be able to accomplish what it does.
We contributed substantially to the scholarship fund through three designated events—fall seminar series, economic forecast breakfast and golf outing. From this fund, your chapter awarded scholarships to Orange County accounting undergraduates and one UC Irvine Ph.D. candidate. We made some initial progress on establishing a financial literacy program, but there is more to do and I will continue to provide assistance where appropriate. We also established a program to identify new board members and get them involved in chapter business on a trial basis. This will help us continue with interested members participating as directors and officers.
I also want to thank all our wonderful sponsors. As you know, it takes a lot to put on our chapter programs, both in terms of money and expertise. Our sponsors make these programs more interesting and enjoyable.
Special thanks go to program director Gary Hammond and program associate Nancy Wilson. Gary represents our chapter in Redwood City and keeps us informed on a regular basis of CalCPA business and events. Nancy does everything—from coordinating all our programs and events to keeping track of attendance for CPE credits. She has done a wonderful job this year making everything run smoothly.
As I transition into the role of past president, I reflect on a rewarding experience. Little did I expect seven years ago that I would be honored to serve as your chapter president. It has indeed been a great honor. I enjoyed my roles leading up to serving as president and will continue to be active in the chapter. I hope all of you consider giving something back to CalCPA in the form of participation on the board or as an interest group chair. It is you—the members—who make this organization what it is today: 35,000 professionals striving to make a positive difference in this state.
Thank you again for the honor of having served you. All the best.
