For me, the fall season has always been a time of reflection. I take this time to think about goals that I set at the beginning of the year and assess how I’ve progressed in accomplishing them. It is also a time for my family and me to plan for the holidays and look forward to the coming spring. This year has been no different, and as I think about the last four months of my participation as your president, I’m struck by the immense involvement by so many people toward the betterment of our personal and professional goals.

I love fall. Don’t get me wrong, the other seasons certainly have their merits, but fall represents to me a time of transition: To re-engage, to review the first half of the year with an eye on planning the next one—and did I mention the happiness of shipping my kids back to school? Fall is also shaping up to be an important time for your chapter.

Are any of you up for a challenge? Yes, I know it’s summer, and the smell of grilling steaks and the lure of mindless novels is compelling. But I bet that as we enjoy the songs of the Beach Boys, we can grow our ranks and expand our membership. I’ll be back to that in a moment.

I don’t know about you, but my family and I had a blast at our chapter’s officer installation held in May at the Santa Monica Pier. Seriously, we’re CPAs, and when was the last time we had to yell over the roar of a roller coaster to be heard? For the 210 of us who had mimosas and brunch as the Pacific Ocean sparkled and the amusement rides twirled, it was a wonderful time to come together and celebrate the many achievements to which CalCPA can lay claim.

On behalf of the chapter’s board of directors and staff, I want to thank you for your continued support and participation. As your new president, it is my honor to thank everyone who has committed their time and resources to participate in an active board role, with special thanks going to Jenny Bolsky, who masterfully led our chapter past the 10,000 member mark. As everyone knows, behind a great board is great professional staff, so I also want to thank our returning program director, Maria Nazario, and welcome our newest program associate, Barbara Petersson, who will join Sandy Benitez and Delia Rincon. I’d also like to thank all of the other professional staff who are focused on providing valuable services to our members.

Can anyone honestly say that the past 24 months haven’t been a perpetual roller coaster of economic and social change? Recessions, health care reform, local and worldwide financial earthquakes. All have a place front and center in our personal and professional lives.

CalCPA’s fiscal year ends April 30. As expected, the year flew by and it is time to say good bye and thank you. Serving the chapter and its members has been an honor, and I learned a great deal from this experience.

I want to remind you of some of the ways CalCPA serves our community. Needless to say, it is our member volunteers—who selflessly give their time and energy—that make these programs work.
You probably are familiar with the volunteer tax assistance programs we provide for low-income individuals. This is a valuable service to many families and individuals who need help maximizing tax-savings opportunities and credits they don’t fully understand and may not even be aware of. Busy season is here. Most of us won’t have much time for extracurricular activities for the next several months. The volume of meetings, events, committees and available CPE declines dramatically at this time of year, and most CPAs don’t have the luxury of focusing on anything but getting our work done. I want to remind you that CalCPA offers an abundance of resources during this most hectic time.
