Much To Do in November
By Jenny Bolsky, CPA
I apologize for the erroneous link in my October message, which should have taken you to our Public Service Award application. The link has been corrected, and once again I encourage you to go online to nominate a chapter member for the award. Nominations are due by Dec. 31.
November is a busy month for your chapter as we have some of our biggest and most successful events upcoming. Whatever your most important reasons are for being a CalCPA member, at least one of your needs will probably be addressed by these events.
For those most interested in access to education and technical information, we start the month with the chapter’s annual Tax Night Wednesday, Nov. 4. Presented jointly by the chapter Taxation Committee and the Los Angeles County Bar Association Taxation Section, the event covers current trends and federal and state tax updates.
The afternoon provides breakout sessions on federal taxation, including a legislative update, and also highlights California state taxation, including comments from a representative of the Office of the California State Controller and Steve Sims, taxpayer advocate from the Franchise Tax Board. They will update us on problem resolution at the state level.
The second round of breakout sessions offers an update on preparer penalties, plus current events in trusts and estates. The evening features a keynote presentation by U.S. Taxpayer Advocate Nina E. Olson. Our annual tax night is generally well-attended by IRS leaders from the Los Angeles District, making it an excellent opportunity to meet some of the people who influence the Los Angeles business environment. You can register online.
If you are interested in networking, come to our eighth annual ABC (Attorney-Banker-CPA) Networking Breakfast Tuesday Nov. 10. This is our chapter’s biggest networking event and typically attracts more than 400 attorneys, bankers and CPAs who are all interested in making good business connections. This is a great opportunity to make new contacts, build existing business relationships and renew old acquaintances. There is an abundance of high-quality networking over breakfast. The breakfast also is a fund-raiser for chapter scholarships to accounting students attending universities in the Los Angeles area; last year we raised more than $16,000 for chapter scholarships. Bring your business cards and prepare to make excellent connections at this event. Register online.
And for those who want more community involvement, we’ll hold our fifth annual Power by Numbers Run/Walk in beautiful Brentwood Sunday, Nov. 22. You needn’t be a runner to enjoy this fabulous event. Lots of walkers, including kids and canines, also turn out for the 5K or family 1K at this event. In recent years we’ve had more than 500 runners and walkers, and everyone always has a great time! Bring your family, friends and colleagues, form a team and compete, or just get out and enjoy a beautiful day on the attractive tree-lined route. It’s a great chance to socialize with your fellow CPAs in a relaxed environment, and this event provides great community visibility for CalCPA and our profession. In addition to being fun and social, this run/walk is a charitable event. We’ll be raising funds for the chapter’s scholarship fund and accepting nonperishable food donations for the Westside Food Bank. More information and registration is available online.
