Tech Tips: What is SaaS and Why Do I Care?

March 1st, 2013

By Bruce A. Gray, CPA, chair, chapter Technology Committee

Software as a service (SaaS) is the term to describe software that doesn’t live on your desktop or mobile computer, but is accessed via a web browser. Ones that might be familiar are applications like QuickBooks Online or Microsoft Office 365. Rather than having to bother installing software on your local desktop or server, you can work wherever you have an internet connection and browser. There are several advantages to licensing SaaS products instead of traditional installed software:

  • You can access your work from anywhere.
  • SaaS applications are generally scalable in real-time, meaning you don’t have to pay for more users than you need.
  • Updates are automatic and ongoing without the need for installing downloaded updates.
  • SaaS applications generally work on multiple platforms, so it doesn’t matter if you’re Windows, iOS or android, as long as you have a compatible browser. Also, many SaaS applications have apps for mobile devices making it easier still to access information on the go.

I know: You’re wondering about security. Well, like in any situation where you are accessing information via the internet, it’s important to do your homework on the provider and to make sure you’re using secure networks to access your data. Most SaaS application providers are sensitive to security needs and make extensive efforts to protect the security of data as it crosses the internet.

President’s/Vice President’s Breakfast Meeting

March 1st, 2013

At the President’s/Vice President’s Breakfast meeting we met prior to Council to share with each other the happenings in our chapters. It’s a time when we can share ideas and get some insight from our state level officers and the executive team of CalCPA. Discussion covered the full gamut of concerns, but a couple of key areas of concern emerged.

The first dealt with what our members, who are not in public practice, are getting out of membership. These members are frequently referred to as B&I members (business and industry). With the onset of the economic times we’re in, our membership in this category has been challenged with conveying the value of membership to their employers. As leaders, we see these members as a great resource to the profession. The insight they bring and their participation is vital in our chapter meetings. Alex and I reported to the group the initial positive results of our B&I discussion group that has been meeting. It’s our belief that many in the CFO/controller positions welcome interaction with their peers, and it’s our hope that by creating this forum our chapter is providing value in the exchange of ideas that occurs.
