Personally, I think a mentor should not be your boss; in fact, I'd suggest not in the same company/business. You will undoubtedly know what your boss and organization wants, feels, thinks, experiences, etc. Having a completely separate (and neutral) view-point, can offer more 'experience' to an upcomer.
