Meet the Board: Kathy Johnson, Director
A native of Texas, Kathy Johnson grew up in Galveston, but has moved frequently with her career before settling into Yucaipa. She is the vice president of finance for the Los Angeles Newspaper Group, Inland Newspaper Division, which includes the San Bernardino Sun, Inland Valley Daily Bulletin, Redlands Daily Facts, San Gabriel Tribune, Pasadena Star-News and Whittier Daily News.
As is typical for most board members, CalCPA isn’t the only organization in which she is active. She is a board member of the Redlands Rotary, where she also serves on the Scholarship Selection Committee, the Redlands Rotary Ride Committee, the Holiday Party Committee and various other special projects as needed. Kathy loves sports and is also active on the Cal State San Bernardino Athletic Board, where she has participated in several fund- raising events and membership drives.
Mentoring accounting students at Georgia State University, serving on the Program Review Committee for the United Way and serving on the Toys for Tots Committee have also been part of Kathy’s volunteer activities. She is also a member of the National Association of Minority Media Executives and the AICPA.
Kathy took a two-week business class at Oxford University in London through the Pepperdine University Executive MBA program.
On the lighter side, vacations have found Kathy in Madrid and Hawaii, she loves sports and is an active spectator of football, tennis, basketball, golf, gymnastics and track and field. She also enjoys watching movies, reading and hiking.
Although she has no children of her own, Kathy is a favorite aunt of several nieces and nephews with whom she is actively involved. One of her nieces has called her every week for the last nine years, and spends a few weeks every summer with Kathy and some holidays, as do some of the other nieces and nephews. Kathy is very close to her three brothers, and considers her mom her best friend. Kathy maintains many long lasting friendships with people she has met throughout her career.
