Last Chance: Nominate Group Insurance Trust Trustees By Nov. 1

CalCPA Council annually nominates candidates to stand for election to serve three-year terms as trustees of CalCPA’s Group Insurance Trust (GIT). Additionally, participating GIT employers may nominate qualified candidates to be placed on the ballot by submitting supporting petitions from at least 20 firms participating in one or more of the GIT’s group health and welfare plans by Nov. 1.

Weigh in on Sustainability Standards for Your Industry

Upon completing provisional standards for 79 industries, the Sustainability Accounting Standards Board is now in a period of deep consultation to gather additional input prior to codifying the standards in Q4 2017. Contact the sector analyst, which can be done online, for your industry to schedule a consultation meeting to discuss your feedback. SASB is an independent 501(c)(3) organization that maintains industry-specific sustainability accounting standards, which companies can use to disclose material sustainability factors to investors in compliance with Regulation S-K.

$100M in GO-Biz California Competes Tax Credits Available

Cities looking to attract, retain or expand jobs in their community should consider the Governor’s Office of Business and Economic Development (GO-Biz) California Competes Tax Credit Program as part of their strategy.

Applications will be accepted for the program during its next funding period, which will be open from Jan. 2\’9623. This is the second application period for the program this fiscal year, offering $100 million; 25 percent  of these funds are reserved for small businesses with gross receipts of less than $2 million.

Applications are evaluated based on the factors required by statute, including total jobs created, total investment, average wage, economic impact, strategic importance and more. Applications are accepted online. GO-Biz is authorized to award $200 million in each fiscal year 2015-16 through 2017-18 in tax credits.

Applications Due: 2017 CalCPA Campus Ambassador Program

Help spread the word about CalCPA and the CPA profession–applications are being accepted for the CalCPA Campus Ambassador Program.

Campus Ambassadors are students passionate about pursuing a career in accounting and becoming CPAs and will spend approximately 20 hours of work per semester focused on:

  • Building awareness of FREE CalCPA student membership and benefits to students and educators;
  • Increasing visibility of CalCPA on campus; and
  • Strengthening ties between local CalCPA chapters and colleges/universities.

Enhancing High School Accounting Education

The AICPA announced they have partnered with state CPA societies on a program to increase the number of high school educators trained to teach higher order accounting courses across the country. During this school year, the AICPA will be partnering with state CPA societies in a sponsorship capacity in an effort to expand the reach of the Accounting Pilot & Bridge Project. The initiative was created in 2006 by Dr. Dan Deines, CPA. The course is modeled on a class he developed at Kansas State University with the goal of providing a higher level accounting curriculum for high schools to better prepare their students for a career in accounting. To date, more than 1,000 high school teachers in 42 states have been trained through the program and are ready to teach the course in their local schools.
