Two great clichés strike me: live in interesting times and history repeats itself.
I have had the honor of addressing CPA education meetings and consulting with hundreds of families and individuals on a central piece of the Great Recession: the housing mess.

Chapter vice president A.J. Major and I are volunteering for the semi-annual IRS Practitioner Liaison Meetings Nov. 9 in Oakland. Through this liaison with the professional community the IRS communicates its methods and strategies for efficient and effective tax administration, and addresses questions and issues of interest to practitioners.

Your president darting here and there to steal some sports cliché …
… Can’t believe 2011 is fast approaching—we’re in the fourth quarter! Of course, fall in the Bay Area means Indian summer, as evidenced by our most recent “hot” event, ABC Night in Walnut Creek. As expected, it was a great event, though the temperature was elevated a bit. The great turnout will no doubt inspire a return of the event twice in 2011: once in the spring and again in the fall.

Washington, the nation, and the cable news outlets continue the buzz about the fate of the Bush tax cuts. Hey folks, they are everybody’s tax cuts. Bush seemingly left office a long time ago.

As you may know, I unfortunately missed our installation event, though I heard it was great! (If you weren’t there, you don’t have to admit it to me, by the way).
During the same vacation that prevented me from attending that event, CalCPA held its Annual Members Business and Council meeting at Disneyland June 24–25. Representing our chapter were Joelyn Carr-Fingerle, Bob Jones, Chris Yahng, Diana Sanderson-Mori, Jeanne Laye, Noelle Allen and Okorie Ramsey. I want to thank them for “picking me up” in my absence.

I recently noticed “May 10, 1985” on my CPA certificate positioned above my computer monitor. A whole 25 years? Has it been that long? Well, it certainly seems not!
Alas, I am reminded, it is true. I will be turning 50 in a few days, to boot.

I reflect on Joelyn Carr-Fingerle’s final President’s Message—her observation of how fast her one-year term went. I think we can all appreciate that, and how time flies in general. Another busy season is behind us—only to transition to “extension season”—and another year of great chapter events on the horizon.

What a wonderful E-ticket ride it’s been this year! I can’t believe it has whizzed by so fast—sort of like some of those roller coaster rides. Please join us for CalCPA’s Annual Meeting June 24 at Disneyland. (Some of our younger members may not remember A through E tickets at Disneyland).

For those of you who missed it, our Jan. 28 event was wonderful. We learned what we might expect from the legislature this next year from Assembly member Mary Hayashi (Hayward), who chairs the Business & Professions Committee that oversees the California Board of Accountancy. Remember, peer review is now mandatory for those of us in public practice if we prepare any financial statements. Please note that the CBA has also changed the regulations on ethics courses.
