Summer News
By Scott Haislet
As you may know, I unfortunately missed our installation event, though I heard it was great! (If you weren’t there, you don’t have to admit it to me, by the way).
During the same vacation that prevented me from attending that event, CalCPA held its Annual Members Business and Council meeting at Disneyland June 24–25. Representing our chapter were Joelyn Carr-Fingerle, Bob Jones, Chris Yahng, Diana Sanderson-Mori, Jeanne Laye, Noelle Allen and Okorie Ramsey. I want to thank them for “picking me up” in my absence.
I’d like to thank Joelyn for writing the following recap of the meeting:
Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Daisy and Goofy all joined us at the CalCPA reception and dinner in Disneyland, where everyone had a good time.
On the business front, it was announced that CalCPA now has more than 36,000 members, and Conrad Davis (Sacramento Chapter) was installed as chair. Conrad will share his vision for CalCPA for the 2010–11 year at our July chapter meeting. Please join us.
During Friday’s council meeting, we heard from California Board of Accountancy Chair Manuel Ramirez, who spoke about mobility issues, which has passed in all states—except for California and Hawaii. There is no pending legislation in California on this issue, but we should look for something in the next legislative session starting in January. Ramirez also has been successful in getting our license renewal fees reduced for four years starting in July 2011. Watch your CBA Update or check out the E-News service on the CBA website for more news.
Though I missed installation night, I really want to see you Tuesday, July 20 at our Past Presidents Night, where CalCPA Chair Conrad Davis will provide profession and CalCPA updates. I have used ink this time to schedule the event, so my attendance is not negotiable!
Last year, we had many past presidents return with great tales to tell from their tenure at the chapter helm. Perhaps those tales will be “tall” or “taller” this year!
Other upcoming events include the second ABC Night (Sept. 28) at Scott’s Walnut Creek, the site of our famous East Bay cocktail party for the past several years. There won’t be any speech, seminar or CPE, but there will be many bankers, attorneys, CPAs and other financial professionals to meet and greet. We can’t forget to be thankful to our sponsors, particularly those who sponsored the first “west-of-the-Caldecott Tunnel” ABC Night in May, and those that will be helping to underwrite our September event.
Sports Night is coming Oct. 26, so mark your calendar, as it should be a great time as well.
One last thought: I just re-upped my CPA license (turned 50 in June, if you were paying attention to last month’s column). I did the new four-hour ethics course mandated by the CBA. If your license is coming up, make sure you review the FAQ on CalCPA’s website. The CalCPA Education Foundation is presenting the 2010-approved ethics course. I don’t generally like government-mandated stuff, but the 2010 ethics course refreshed my insight as our world and technology advances (e.g., new internet information, the latest Ponzi scheme, etc.), and confirmed that basic ethical conduct will not fundamentally change, no matter what the future may throw at us (see Ecclesiastes Chapter 1).
