Great Year Ahead

By Scott Haislet

6_pres_sm_1I reflect on Joelyn Carr-Fingerle’s final President’s Message—her observation of how fast her one-year term went. I think we can all appreciate that, and how time flies in general. Another busy season is behind us—only to transition to “extension season”—and another year of great chapter events on the horizon.

Behind all great upcoming events will be planning and preparation. To that end, chapter leadership will convene May 18 at Scott’s Oakland for the annual planning conference. This will be a great opportunity for returning chapter leaders to get reacquainted and a chance for new leaders to integrate. All ideas and proposals will be on the table—even the recycled ones!

We can anticipate many of the traditional outings for the 2010-11 year, including Past Presidents’ Night, Tax Night, Sports Night and Honorees Night, among others.

Due to our wildly successful fall ABC Night in recent years, we have upgraded to two ABC nights—May 18 and Sept. 28. Chapter leadership added the May ABC Night to share the fun with those on the west side of the Caldecott Tunnel. That gave the chapter additional sponsorship opportunities, and gave members, affiliates and those in the banking, financial and legal communities a chance to attend ABC Night closer to home.

The chapter thanks Tom Bret and Rob Anderson for their leadership for these events, particularly in the delicate activities of garnering sponsorship, which is generally challenging, and only made more difficult by today’s economic climate.

So, save the dates—May 18 for Scott’s Oakland and Sept. 28 for Scott’s Walnut Creek—for very special evenings of seeing old friends and making new ones.

CalCPA will soon launch is Young and Emerging Leaders certificate program, which will provide YEPs with leadership training and expose participants to other members and leaders in the profession who can serve as mentors.

The program, a seven-month commitment offered at all 14 CalCPA chapters, is open to CalCPA members only. Class size is restricted to 15 members, so it is essential that you register for this program now to ensure you have a seat in the program.
