Embracing Change

By Karan Pohl

5_pres_sm_1Can you believe it is September already? Where did the summer go? For me, September signals the beginning of fall—a season of transition and change. Now, some would grumble about summer departing so quickly. But I enjoy the changes in the weather, the heralding of winter and the upcoming holidays. It really is a matter of perspective and how one reacts to change that determines whether this is a period of discontent or possibilities. Do we ignore change, fight it, embrace it or perhaps a combination thereof?

We are constantly barraged by personal and professional change. With the new laws and regulations such as the Dodd-Frank Act, health care reform, the ever-changing tax landscape and International Financial Reporting Standards, along with a host of other changes both technical and technology related, there is an abundance of sources that keep us constantly reacting to the maelstrom of change.

It is challenging to stay on top of everything. That is why CalCPA is such a valuable resource. Between the classes offered at the chapter level, as well as through the CalCPA Education Foundation, CalCPA strives to keep you current on the latest developments occurring in our profession. Here are a few of the upcoming chapter events:

QuickBooks Update: It is important to keep up with the technological and technical aspects of our profession. Come join us and see if we can make your life a little more efficient by better utilizing this powerful resource.

Attorney’s Bankers and CPA (ABC) Mixer: An excellent method to stay informed is to have a network of other professionals to contact if the need arises. This mixer is a helpful way to add to or start building that network. It is also a scholarship event, so please help us in supporting the future of our profession.

Social Networking/Business Networking: Student Night: This is a relaxing evening spent interacting and sharing your experiences with future CPAs. Our speaker for the evening will be presenting techniques on how we can better utilize social media in our businesses.

Personal Financial Planning & Tax Roundtables: These monthly roundtables cover a variety of topics and are a wonderful opportunity to earn an hour of CPE, as well as discuss some very relevant and timely topics.

It is often said that the only constant in life is change. The key is to remain calm and address change in an informed and well-equipped manner. Hopefully, you will be able to embrace the excitement and challenge of change and overlook the headaches, stress and many problems that are often associated with change. Remember, don’t panic. Enjoy change and see where it leads you.
