Student Night: Come See the Future

This fall quarter at Cal Poly is the start of my fifth year teaching accounting. If you want to get an idea how bright and talented these young people are, come to Student Night, Tuesday, Nov. 18, at the San Luis Obispo Country Club. One of our special guests will be CalCPA Chair Greg Burke. Our other guest will be speaker Peter Khoury of Ovson Communications Groups, who will discuss the characteristics of our students, known as the Millennial Generation—what they are like as a group, how they function in the workplace and their defining life experiences. From our perspective, Khoury also will look at what students can expect when they work for baby boomer managers and partners. It should be a very interesting and entertaining evening.

During Student Night, we also will recognize our chapter’s scholarship recipients from last spring. The chapter has awarded an average of about $10,000 in scholarships over the last five years to Cal Poly students and Cuesta and Hancock students matriculating to four-year schools. We are very proud to be able to award the largest accounting scholarship at Cal Poly’s Accounting Club awards banquet each spring.

We like to have every table sponsored by firms in our chapter. The $100 cost is pretty reasonable. We try to have the tables evenly balanced with students and practitioners, and have discussion leaders available to keep the conversation moving.

So come out to Student Night, have some fun and meet your colleagues and some bright students. You may find yourself talking to a future partner in your firm!
