CalCPA thanks the following California Congressional representatives for expressing their concerns regarding the IRS’ proposed tax return preparer registration proposal: Joe Baca, Ken Calvert, John Campbell, Devin Nunes, Brad Sherman and Mike Thompson. They were among 31 Congress members who signed a letter to U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner asking the department and the IRS to exempt CPAs from the requirement to register persons working in CPAs firms who do not sign a tax return and to delay the implementation of the IRS preparer exam until it’s been demonstrated that return preparer exams are necessary.
Along with co-signing the letter, Sherman also co-authored an op-ed in the Aug. 26 issue of the Wall Street Journal expressing similar concerns regarding tax preparer registration requirements. Wall Street Journal subscribers can read the op-ed online.

Mandatory peer review became effective Jan. 1, 2010, for all California-licensed firms, including sole proprietorships, performing specified accounting and auditing services. Those with license numbers ending in 01-33 are in the first group of licensees required to report peer review information to the California Board of Accountancy no later than July 1, 2011.
This deadline is for your accepted peer review, not just the date by which your peer review is performed.
After your peer review is complete, it is submitted for technical review and committee approval (which can typically take two-three months) Due to tax season, the California Peer Review Committee recommends that the peer review be completed and submitted to their offices by Jan. 31, 2011. The CBA expects you to report on its Peer Review Reporting form the date your peer review was accepted by the committee.
More details on the peer review requirements, including an FAQ, can be found on the CalCPA website.
