“Wheresoever you go, go with all your heart.” — Confucius
What does it take to become the YEP of the Year? Frankly, I’m not so sure, so let’s save this question for Joel Bock for another day. But what I can share with you is that my luck has to do with sincerity to myself and to others.
Success can be achieved when one demonstrate sincerity to oneself by striving for the best. There is only one person you are competing against in life—yourself. So do not cheat yourself by setting low standards or getting by with just the bare minimum because in the end, you will only lose to yourself. Be an over-achiever and you’ll be the next YEP of the Year before you know it! Aim for the moon, and if you fail you will be amongst the stars.
Secondly, give back to the community. It is true that you will get more joy from giving than receiving! This was the very experience I had when I first participated in CSUB’s University Accounting Association. I learned of my budding leadership skills and I became interested in helping others. What’s more exciting than figuring out how I can help or how can I make this a better place? What can I do to improve the surroundings around me?
Whether I be a mother, a wife, an employee, the co-chair of the YEP Committee, a CPA candidate or any plain Jane, it seems that success stems from sincerity to myself and to community—in other words, my diligence and joy in helping others.

Our successful Student Night featured CalCPA CEO Loretta Doon, who gave us a wonderful talk about the do’s and don’ts of networking and making connections to benefit our future career and life paths.
And congratulations to our 2010 scholarship winners: Kathleen Valenzuela, Amy Murch, Cuiping Wang and Ashley Wong.
And we also were honored to present Lauren Be with our 2010 YEP of the Year Award. Be sure to check out the pictures on our website.

It has been my honor and pleasure to serve as chapter president over the past year. I have enjoyed working with and getting to know other local accounting professionals, teachers and students, as well as those from other professions who have supported the chapter by their participation in and sponsorship of our events. Thank you to all who have given their support to ensure the success of our events throughout the year. Congratulations and good luck to the incoming officers and directors. And a special thanks to Julie Jameson, Kay Coffin and Gary Hammond of CalCPA for your continual assistance and guidance.

As we emerge from yet another busy season, it is my pleasure to greet you as the Bakersfield Chapter’s president for 2009–10. I would also like to congratulate the newly elected chapter officers, directors and committee chairs. I look forward to working with this talented group over the next year.
Over the course of the next year, it is my hope to continue the momentum of certain successful events of the past, such as Student Night, Young and Emerging Professionals (YEP) networking events and the Bakersfield Chapter Golf Tournament, as well as provide useful and pertinent CPE events, “Lunch and Learns” and other networking opportunities. I welcome any comments and suggestions regarding areas for improvement. Additionally, I would encourage you to get involved in chapter activities. We are always looking to further utilize the resources of our local membership.
I’d also like to take this opportunity to remind everyone of the upcoming July 1 deadline for the Les Watts Memorial Scholarship applications. This scholarship is available to sophomore, junior or senior accounting students at Bakersfield College and CSUB. If you know anyone who meets the criteria, please encourage them to apply. Download an application.
I look forward to serving you over the course of the next year. Please do not hesitate to contact any of our officers, directors or committee chairs with questions, comments or suggestions.

A big thanks goes out to the 41 CPAs and their family and friends who came out to support the United Way Day of Caring Sept. 6. The volunteers went to the Salvation Army to paint, landscape, clean and have a good time in their blue CalCPA–CPAs Care T-shirts.
For the second year running, the winner of the $100 pizza party for having the most volunteers is Brown Armstrong. Coming in at a close second was CBIZ.
We want to thank each of the other firms for participating: Barbich Longcrier Hooper and King; Daniells Phillips Vaughan and Bock; and James H. Cordle, CPA.
